Source Level Initiative
Target Group: Vulnerable children away from home, 10 – 18 years.
Program: Extending Home Placement Project’s work, intervention is done at source areas from which the children are coming to the city of Mumbai and ending up on the streets. It is based out of Mughalsarai which is a major railway junction on the migration and trafficking routes from the eastern part of the country. Efforts are being made to strengthen families and resolve the causes that force children to move away from families either by voluntary migration, running away or trafficking. Interventions are at the family level and in the community to create awareness about children's issues and child rights in the villages in identified districts in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Services & Supports Offered: Volunteer capacity building, linking families with poverty alleviation and self employment programs, basic immediate needs to children including nutrition, clothing and shelter, counseling, family tracking, family restoration.
Issues being Addressed:
Strengthening and sensitization of government systems to provide protection to vulnerable children.
Long Term Goals: The Source Level Initiative is focusing on activating and strengthening government systems to take responsibility for protection of vulnerable children. Focus is also placed on educating local communities of the risk of trafficking and ploys of trafficking agents and the realities of migration to cities such as Mumbai.
